How Much Storage Do You Actually Need for a 2-Bedroom Apartment?

If you’re staring at your boxes wondering how much space you need to rent, you’re likely looking at two heavy hitters: the 10' x 15' or the 10' x 20'.

Here are some thoughts on which unit size won't leave your stuff sitting out in the rain.

Keep in Mind - At Easy Self Storage we also have units outside of these units listed below. These are just to give an idea. Check our website for current unit availability.

The 10' x 15 unit

This is about 150 square feet. If you’re a bit of a space-saving pro, this is usually the sweet spot for a two-bedroom place.

  • What actually fits: You can comfortably fit two full bedroom sets (mattresses, bed frames, dressers), your living room furniture, and a dining set. You’ll still have room for about 30–40 boxes.

  • The Vibe: It feels like a large spare bedroom.

  • The Reality Check: You can’t just throw things in here. You’ll need to stack your chairs, stand your mattresses on their sides, and use the height of the unit. If you have a massive sectional or a lot of heavy appliances (like a washer/dryer set), it’s going to get crowded quickly.

The 10' x 20'

This is essentially a standard one-car garage (200 square feet). If you have a two-bedroom apartment and you’ve lived there for more than a couple of years, this is likely the one you want.

  • What actually fits: Everything. Two bedrooms, a full living room, a dining room, your patio furniture, and all those boxes of holiday decorations.

  • The Vibe: It’s big enough that you don't have to be a professional mover to get everything inside.

  • The Perk: The biggest win here is the aisle. In a 10' x 20', you can actually leave a walkway down the center. This is a lifesaver if you realize three weeks from now that you packed your passport or a specific power tool at the very back of the unit.

How to Decide (The "Gut Check")

Before you pull the trigger, take a look at your living room.

  1. Do you have "Large" hobbies? If you have bikes, a kayak, or a workbench's worth of tools?.

  2. Is your furniture "heavy" or "light"? If you have solid wood dressers and a heavy leather sofa that doesn't come apart, you'll need the extra square footage.

  3. Are you moving appliances? If you’re bringing the big appliances with you such as a fridge or washer/dryer, do yourself a favor and get the 10' x 20'.

The Pro Tip: Just because it all fits in a 10x10, does not mean that is the best option. What happens if you need access to that one item buried in the back of the unit. A larger unit comes in handy to keep things organized and leave walk ways & access to items you may need while it is in storage. Keep the stuff you might need accessible close to the door.

At Easy Self Storage we have several more sizes larger, smaller, and even between 10x10 or a 10x20. Check our website for current unit availability.
